Diet Description

Recent studies by Kentucky Equine Research have shown that the form and source of Vitamin E do make a difference to horses. E-Max Ester & Nano-E™ are both revolutionary natural supplements that provide unsurpassed Vitamin E nutrition to horses of all ages. E-Max Ester is used in designated Saracen diets, whereas Nano-E™ is a water soluble liquid supplement which provides 250 iu of Vitamin E per millilitre, and can be administered orally, or topically on feed. Mares, stallions and newborn foals may benefit from the strategic supplementation of Vitamin E. With the introduction of Nano-E™, there is now a more bioavailable and effective form of Vitamin E with accelerated absorption rates because the product is water-soluble.

E-Max Ester & Nano-E™ are natural organic sources of Vitamin E. They have superior bioavailability compared with the commonly used synthetic versions, being more highly digestible and preferentially metabolised by the horse. Moreover, this natural form of Vitamin E is retained in tissues for longer periods of time, creating a reservoir that allows it to be instantly available when the horse most needs it, namely in times of stress or during periods of confinement.

Vitamin E contributes richly to the well-being of the horse and plays an imperative role in immune, cardiovascular, circulatory and reproductive functions. In addition, Vitamin E is an essential component of bodywide antioxidant defences.

Nano-E™ provides highly bioavailable natural Vitamin E to horses through a unique delivery system. Natural Vitamin E is far superior to synthetic forms of the nutrient. Nano-E™ features enhanced bioavailability and rapid absorption due to a special nanodispersion system that enables it to be water dispersible. Vitamin E is often recommended as a supportive therapy for horses with neurological problems, fertility issues or poor performance. It helps maintain normal muscle function and optimise recovery times.

Broodmares and foals

Recent research has investigated the value of the use of Vitamin E on breeding farms. Mares supplemented with Vitamin E have shown optimum passive transfer of antibodies to foals, which ensure the strength of the neonatal immune system. Failure of passive transfer leaves foals susceptible to septicaemia and bacterial infections. In a study conducted at the University of Connecticut, researchers found that mares supplemented with Vitamin E had higher antibody concentrations in blood and colostrums than control mares. The concentrations of foals reflected those of their dams, with foals from supplemented mares having increased levels of antibodies. Mares known to have poor quality colostrums, be poor milkers or have had failure of passive transfer of immunity in previous years should be supplemented with Vitamin E for at least a month pre and post foaling.

There is also increasing evidence that Vitamin E supplementation may aid fertility in mares. Due to modern management practices, including early breeding dates, mares may not be receiving adequate Vitamin E nutrition through rations composed largely of hay and grain. Supplementation will increase circulating levels of Vitamin E and may maintain optimum fertility, especially in mares with reduced uterine defence mechanisms. Pregnant mares with a history of placental dysfunction may also benefit from Vitamin E in the last 2-4 weeks of pregnancy. This supplementation can reduce the potential for hypoxic damage to the newborn foal. Foals suffering hypoxic damage are also candidates for high doses of Vitamin E.

Stallions

Vitamin E has been linked to maintaining libido and semen quality in stallions. In addition to this, one of the most important functions of Vitamin E in stallions is cell membrane protection. Sperm motility is commonly used as an indicator of oxidative stress. Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, reacts with free radicals to protect the cell membranes and the fatty acids in those membranes that are crucial to fertilizing capacity. Stallions suffering sperm motility problems may benefit from supplementation with Nano-E™. Higher circulating levels of antioxidants may create an environment to support the survival of progressively motile sperm.

Confinement

Horses that do not have access to pasture may not be consuming optiomal levels of Vitamin E. Nano-E™ provides this essential vitamin in a form that is easily absorbed and is appropriate for horses of all ages that are stabled due to training schedules, travel or injury.

Performance

Horses asked to work strenuously benefit from Nano-E™. A regular schedule of training and competition makes performance horses susceptible to muscle damage, which is due largely to oxidative stress. Nano-E™ provides fast-acting antioxidant protection for hard-working horses.

Neurological Problems

Veterinarians and researchers have found that Vitamin E supplementation often helps in the recovery of certain neurological problems. Nano-E™ provides natural-source Vitamin E in a form that is quickly absorbed.

Stressful Events

Prior to relocation, long-distance travel, weaning or other stress-inducing events, Nano-E™ provides a boost to antioxidant and immune defences.

Convalescence

Following injuries such as lacerations, puncture wounds or burns, the addition of Nano-E™ to the diet will increase antioxidant activity and enhance recovery.

Feeding Recommendation

  • Maintenance dose for stabled horses without access to good grazing  4 – 8 ml per day (1000 – 2000 iu)
  • Stallions during the breeding season  6 – 12 ml per day (1500 – 3000 iu)
  • Pregnant and lactating mares (late gestation and early lactation) 6 – 12 ml per day (1500 – 3000 iu)
  • Foals, including newborns 12 ml per day (3000 iu)
  • Pre-competition 12 - 20 ml (3000 - 5000 iu) 6-12 hours prior to competition or stressful event

Nano-E™ is available in 450-ml bottles containing a minimum of 250 iu per ml of Vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopherol. Nano-E™ should be administered orally or top-dressed onto dry feeds at the time of feeding. For best results, the supplement should be fed soon after removal from the bottle. The pump measures out 4 ml.
