Diets that contain high levels of non-structural carbohydrates such as cereals and molasses can compromise the horse's digestive system, and consequently this may affect optimum muscle function. Re-Leve is a performance ration that has been based on extensive research carried out by Dr. Stephanie Valberg, a researcher at the University of Minnesota and Kentucky Equine Research in Lexington. It is formulated to provide the equine athlete with the high levels of energy that it requires to perform, using a variety of alternative energy sources. Highly fermentable fibre sources and high oil levels reduce the reliance on starch in the diet. This will therefore help to avoid the metabolic consequences associated with high levels of starch reaching the hindgut and may also help to maintain an even temperament. Re-Leve is also fortified with Stamm 30, a concentrated source of proteins, trace elements and yeast. The inclusion of a yeast culture that is specifically designed for the equine ensures optimal microbial activity, which in turn helps to promote enzyme production that enhances phosphorous, magnesium, and potassium absorption as well as promoting fibre digestion.

High levels of antioxidant micronutrients, such as vitamin E and Selenium, are included together with daily levels of electrolytes to assist normal muscle function. An electrolyte such as Summer Games should be fed in addition in most cases. Horses should always receive at least 1.5% of their body weight as good quality forage.
