Foal Starter Mix
SUITABLE FOR...
• Foals from two weeks of age upwards
• Preparing a foal's digestive tract for concentrate feed prior to weaning
• Preparing a foal's digestive tract for concentrate feed prior to weaning
Diet Description
A palatable, nutrient rich mix, designed to be fed in small quantities to young foals before weaning. It is an excellent way of introducing other nutrients to the foal's gut as it starts to develop. The minerals are well balanced to maximise bone deposition, and the good quality proteins provide an excellent source of essential amino acids. The cereals are micronised to aid digestion, and the fibre levels are kept low, as a foal's gut cannot cope with large quantities of roughage early on.
FEATURES & BENEFITS...
• The main objective of creep feeding is to speed up the anatomical and physiological development of the gut, so that the foal becomes accustomed to concentrates and, consequently, weaning is a less stressful experience.
• Despite the fact that the mare will be producing large amounts of milk during the first 100 days of lactation, supplemental nutrition produces a significant growth response in foals. The nutrients supplied by the creep feed will compensate for the eventual decline in the mare's milk, and provide a consistent level of nutrition during this particularly demanding time in a foal's maturation.
• Creep fed foals appear to exhibit a more consistent feeding pattern after weaning than those not receiving creep, which should lead to more consistent growth rates, rather than fluctuations which could result in bone abnormalities.
