Elevate
Diet Description
Recent studies by Kentucky Equine Research have shown that the form and source of vitamin E does make a difference to horses. E-Max Ester and Elevate are both revolutionary natural supplements that provide unsurpassed vitamin E nutrition to horses of all ages. E-Max Ester is included in designated Saracen diets, whereas Elevate is a water-soluble liquid supplement that provides 500iu of vitamin E per millilitre, and can be administered orally or topically on feed.
E-Max Ester and Elevate are natural organic sources of vitamin E. They have superior bioavailability compared with the commonly used synthetic versions, being more highly digestible and preferentially metabolised by the horse. Moreover, this natural form of vitamin E is retained in tissues for longer periods of time, creating a reservoir that allows it to be instantly available when the horse needs it most, namely in times of stress or during periods of confinement. Vitamin E contributes richly to the well-being of the horse and plays an imperative role in immune, cardiovascular, circulatory and reproductive functions. In addition, vitamin E is an essential component of body-wide antioxidant defences. In addition, vitamin E is an essential component of body wide antioxidant defences, helping to neutralise free radicals, in order to help maintain a healthy musculoskeletal system and immune function.
Vitamin E supplementation is essential for horses that are not able to graze. The vitamin E content of dried forages such as hay is severely diminished, with forages often losing 75% or more of their vitamin content through harvesting and storage. Therefore, supplementation with vitamin E is most crucial during the winter when some horses are fed diets almost exclusively composed of preserved forages. Inadequate fortification of textured feeds or the feeding of straight grains (oats, for example) may also contribute to vitamin E deprivation. Supplementation may be indicated year round for racehorses because they are confined to stables and do not have regular access to fresh pasture.
Performance horses are susceptible to exercise induced muscle damage. With the introduction of Elevate, there is now a bioavailable antioxidant to assist in their recovery from hard work. Horses with an inadequate reserve of vitamin E may experience muscle soreness or stiffness during exercise, and prolonged recovery following strenuous work. Because of the influence of vitamin E on nearly all body processes, horses of all ages can benefit from supplementation.
